"We are global warming. We are pandemics. Noi siamo il diluvio", afferma Stefano Cagol, prendendo il diluvio biblico (e non solo quello) come metafora e summa di tutti gli sconvolgimenti che sono già davanti ai nostri occhi, ma non riusciamo ancora a comprendere a fondo. Questo libro raccoglie le riflessioni sulle interferenze antropogeniche che l'artista ha innescato durante un processo creativo durato un anno, anticipando profeticamente e attraversando il Covid-19, prima grande sovversione del Terzo millennio. Il progetto di Stefano Cagol "The Time of the Flood. Beyond the myth through climate change" [Il Tempo del Diluvio. Oltre il mito attraverso il cambio climatico] – vincitore nel 2019 della 6ª edizione dell'Italian Council – indaga un argomento caro all'artista da decenni, ovvero gli squilibri del nostro rapporto con la natura, e lo fa questa volta ispirandosi all'immagine archetipica del Diluvio Universale.
Il diluvio è per antonomasia la rappresentazione di un evento catastrofico che vede l'essere umano nel duplice ruolo, da un lato passivo in quanto subisce la decisione di D. di distruggere il mondo per mezzo dell'acqua, elemento anch'esso duale come vedremo più avanti; dall'altro lato l'uomo è attivo e partecipativo, è Noè infatti per volere di D. a costruire l'Arca e salvare così la specie umana e animale. Riprendendo l'immagine terribile e insieme salvifica del Diluvio Universale, Cagol la usa come grande metafora della potente ristrutturazione del mondo, laddove l'essere umano – spiega l'artista – è riscaldamento globale, è cambiamento climatico, è il diluvio nelle sue interferenze antropogeniche.

"The Time of the Flood. Beyond the myth through climate change," Stefano Cagol's year-long international artistic research initiative, began in Berlin on the 1st of November, 2019. By the time Cagol completed his artist residency at MOMENTUM at the end of February 2020, he had produced three new video works, a number of performative interventions throughout the city, countless photographs, installations, several studio visits, a symposium at the Italian Cultural Institute in Berlin – and the world had irrevocably turned upside down. Cagol developed his concept for "The Time of the Flood" long before the first cases of Covid-19 were registered in Germany. His concept, to recontextualize the biblical story of the Flood within our current climate emergency, remains a crucial and timely reflection on the devastating impacts we humans have on our planet. Yet who could have imagined at the start of this project just how prophetic and timely it would prove to be?

Stefano Cagol è un artista italiano, che ha partecipato alla 55ª Biennale di Venezia, Manifesta 11, 14ª Biennale di Curitiba, 2ª OFF Biennale Cairo, 1ª Xinjiang Biennale e tenuto mostre personali al CCA – Center for Contemporary Art Tel Aviv, Museo MA*GA, Museo Mart, CLB Berlin e ZKM Karlsruhe. Ha studiato all'Accademia di Brera e alla Ryerson University di Toronto con una borsa di studio postdottorato del Governo del Canada.
Stefano Cagol is an Italian artist who participated in the 55th Venice Biennale, Manifesta 11, 14th Curitiba Biennale, 2nd OFF Biennale Cairo, 1st Xinjiang Biennale, and has held solo shows at CCA – Center for Contemporary Art Tel Aviv, MA*GA Museum, Mart Museum, CLB Berlin and ZKM Karlsruhe. He studied at the Brera Academy in Milan and Ryerson University in Toronto with a post-doctoral fellowship from the Government of Canada.
